Product Review: Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour Lipstick

22 Aug

ImageWhen I checking out the Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour Lipstick I had my heart set on the Fuchsia Forever 015 shade. Nothing else mattered, however, the sweet lil sales rep at the counter said, “This is a new launch from Maybelline, and it will last for 14 hours straight without a reapplication.” I gave her a sugary smile back but thought to myself, “Yeah, sure! Last I checked I wasn’t purchasing fabric paint!”

Later that week, an event turned up where I had the opportunity to try out my latest addition to an already vast collection of lipsticks. However, plans failed, and instead of sipping on some classy wine, I ended up at a regular fact food joint, downing French fries, a burger and slurping Coke.

As is customary with most other bright shades of lipsticks, I figured that I needed to check if this one had smudged around my mouth. A visit to the washroom resulted in my jaw dropping to the floor, making a hole all the way to China. The lipstick was intact! Not a smudge, not a single layer off making the shade look lighter, no chapped lips lacking moisture, NOTHING! It was like I had just applied some, instead of looking like I had indulged in a sloppy meal. That sales rep was not kidding me when she spoke of the 14-hour stay.

I am certain that I am going back to get myself a few other shades that had caught my eye, its completely worth it! All the shades are great, but of you are looking for a young and dashing one, then Fuchsia Forever 015 is the one for you.

A meal did nothing to ruin the 14-hour stay claim, next I am going to try making out. Any takers?

Messy Triple Braided Bun

3 Jul

Image

Yes, I have been away for a while, and I am sorry about that. The geek in me took over and all the bubbly girlie stuff took a back seat. However, I am back, and I have a very cute and messy DIY hairdo for you. Here is how to go about it:

Firstly, part your hair into three ponytails and secure them with an elastic band

Image

Next, braid the pony tails, and make sure that the braids are not too tight. Secure the ends with an elastic band

Image

After that twist the braids into individual buns and secure them with bobby pins

Image

Tada! This is the look you will attain at the end!

The Parallel Universe Nail Art

10 May

Image

Yes, I admit, I am obsessed with the Space nail art, and watching Doctor Who day in and day out doesn’t help in curbing this obsession, only inflaming it further. I had done a space nail art as a part of the Doctor Who Nail Art (look for it in the archives), and so I thought of doing the same with the parallel universe as the theme.

Since I had used blue as a base in the other nail art, I thought of using black in this one, to give the parallel universe a more diabolic feel. The technique is the same, apply a base coat in the beginning, and before it dries, dab on different colours of your choice onto your nail with the help of a sponge so that the result is something like this

Image

Finally, apply a coat of your favourite glitter nail paint to complete the starry look! The best thing about using sponge in your nail art is that you can never go wrong with it, it will look fabulous in the end so long as you have a glittery nail paint at hand!

Leopard Print Nail Art Tutorial

1 May

Be a darling and don’t resort to wearing leopard skin, but you can surely flaunt the chic looking print on your nails guilt-free with this easy tutorial. Here is how to go about it:

  • First of all, apply shades of any pale nail paint that you like, I  have gone with grey and candy pink. After that take a toothpick and flatten its end, to make it less pointed and apply random splashes of alternate shades onto your dried nails

Image

  • After that, apply a black border to those splashes, but leave some space between the border to resemble the leopard print. Once it dries, apply a coat of transparent nail paint and you are done!

The Maiden Braids

24 Apr

Image

The only reason that I have chosen to feature the Maiden Braids is because they look damn right cute and suit the summer look to perfection. Needless to say that they are also pretty easy to actually pull off. Be it a casual summer dress or even a denim ensemble, the maiden braids will be a hit with them all! Here is how the accomplish the look effortlessly:

  • First of all, part your hair into five portions, one thick braid in the center, and two thinner braids on each side; make sure that the braids are loose to give them a flat and wider look. Also, do not secure the four thinner braids with a rubber band on the top, only at the bottom

Image

  • Secure the braid in the middle in a bun (for the tutorial check out my ‘The Braided Bun’ post), and simply secure the other four braids by taking them over your head and pinning then on to the opposite side of your head

Image

  • Make sure that all the braids are secure enough with enough and more bobby pins so that they do not slide off of your head, and you are done!

Twist and Fix Pony

23 Apr

Image

Today TressMess turns a month old! And so I have decided to do something easy yet classy. That seems to be my usual motto. However, this hair do is not only effortless to do, but looks perfect for a summer day when you want the least bit of hair at the nape of your neck, and also want to avoid looking like Professor Mcgonagall with a hair do so severe that it would make your face look stretched.

Here is how to go about this cute and simple hair do:

  • First of all, part your hair in the middle, and secure one of the partition with a rubber band

Image

  • After that take the top most portion of the remaining hair and twist tightly enough so that it doesn’t come apart, and add it to the pony, securing it with a rubber band

Image

  • Make two more twists like the previous one, add them to the pony one afte the other, and secure them with rubber bands as well

Image

  • Add a hair accessory to the pony to make it look chic and also hide all the twists and turns, and you are done!

The Eyeliner Conundrum

19 Apr

Liquid eyeliners are the best and the worst thing that can happen to your eyes. Best if you get it right, and worst if you mess up and end up looking like you got into a drunken brawl. I have long since learnt that the best way to get the eyeliner right is to have a steady hand (stating the obvious, but there is no other way around the damn thing!). Also, use the liner that you are most comfy with, not something everyone else is supposedly using. Here are some of my fav styles in eyeliner make-up:

  • Cat Eye

Image

The Cat eye is the classic winged eyeliner technique that looks great with right about any attire. you just have to be careful about the rest of your make-up. Dark shades of lipstick look great with this kind of eyeliner, and the nude bottom of the eye balances the look not making you look too decked up.

  • Open Wings

Image

Phew! It took me some time to get this right as the wings kept getting too close to each other. This look is perfect for a casual party, or a girls’ night out. Try and keep the rest of the make-up light or nude to neutralise look, unless of course you are actually aiming at being the center of attention; now who doesn’t want that!

  • Arabian Eye

Image

This is by far my favourite most one, as it outlines your eyes perfectly making them look so gorgeous. Make sure that the eyeliner is meeting at both the corners of your eyes, and the outline looks like an almond. This eye make-up would look perfect for traditional wear, and also when you want to make your eyes look mystic. Don’t hold back on the rest of the make-up, because with Arabian eyes you just cannot go wrong!

  • Drop Eye

Image

Drop eye is not the usual technique one would use when doing the eye make-up, as it has the regular cat eye look on the top of the eye, but at the bottom it drops downwards, not really touching the outline of your eye. Once you get it right, this can be a unique look to flaunt.

  • Thin Eye

Image

This basically simply outlines the top of the eye, perfect for daily wear, no wings, more like a string, it blends in with the rest of your make-up if you are looking to pull off a subtle look.

  • Go-thick Eye

Image

This is literally Gothic eye, due to the thickness of the liner and the devil-may-care look that it gives you. You can either just do the top of the eye, and leave the bottom of the eye nude, or do both the outlines. Looks great on a LBD and also anything that makes you look like the newest recruit of the motorcycle gang!

Tip: If you find it hard to use the liquid liner for the lower outline of the eye, you can resort to a smudge-free and long lasting black eye pencil too, it will give you the same results.

Smokey Eye Make-up

18 Apr

Image

The Smokey Eyes are probably the most sought after eye make-up, and not for nothing. They go with any look, be it formal or party wear, just so long as you choose the right shades. Smokey eyes are usually done in shades of black and grey, however, I have experimented with shades of turquoise blue. Here is how you can accomplish the look with minimal pains, all by yourself!

  • First, apply a nude shade of eye shadow, and if you don’t have one, then you can use your preferred shade of compact powder as well. After that take the lighter shade of the colour you have chosen for the Smokey Eye look and apply the lighter shade onto the inner side of your eyelid

Image

  • After that apply the darker shade and blend the two in the center of your eyelid to give out a shaded effect

Image

  • Dab on some nude glittery eye shadow underneath your eyebrow

Image

  • After that apply liquid eyeliner in any way you prefer. I have gone with the Arabian winged style

Image

  • Lastly, apply mascara and dab on some of the lighter shade of the eye shadow that you have used underneath the eye to give it the finishing touch, and you are done!

Image

Tip: If you feel like the lighter side of the eye shadow is not too visible or has blended into the darker shade, then dab on some silver or white eye shadow onto it so that it becomes lighter and the shaded effect is maintained

Peppy Spring Nail Art

12 Apr

Image

Its Spring so it is time to get all bright and shiny, not just with your wardrobe, but also your nails and make-up! Here is a simple and cute nail art which is very easy and time efficient to do, and will go well with any attire you pick, cos it has all the colours that you could possibly wear this Spring!

  • First of all, apply a coat of plain white nail paint, don’t make it too thick, and then let it dry completely
  • Next choose all the bright and cute nail paints you have in your collection, and simply dip the end of a bobby pin in these colours and apply tiny dots onto your nails
  • Let the dots dry completely so that they do not smudge and finish off with a coat of transparent nail paint

Your nails are all set to look like sweet lil candies!
